YouTube Notifications in the Navigation Bar

YouTube has recently started to experiment with replacing Google+ notifications in the navigation bar with YouTube notifications. You get notifications for recently uploaded videos from your subscribed channels, but only if you've enabled notifications for those channels. For example, you can go to the subscription manager and click the bell icon next to a channel to enable or disable notifications.

The settings button sends you to the Notifications section from YouTube's Settings page and the 3-dot icon next to each notification lets you turn off notifications from the corresponding channel.

If you don't like this experiment, you can always clear cookies for youtube.com in your browser's settings and opt out.

  1. You say Google is "replacing" G+ notifications with youTube notifications. Is it possible to receive notifications from both, or would it be only possible from one or the other?

    1. Right now, it's not possible, but it would make sense to get all the notifications, no matter what Google service you are using. YouTube could be a source of content, just like Google+, Google Photos and maybe other Google services: Calendar, Gmail, Drive etc.

Just in case anyone is wondering, this cookie value works for opting in:
      * Go to youtube.com and change VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE cookie value to Qa1hUZu3gtk using an extension like EditThisCookie for Chrome, Cookies Manager+ for Firefox or even directly from the browser's settings.

    1. That's not how Google works. Google.com would still look like this:

      http://web.archive.org/web/19981202230410/http://www.google.com/

  3. I noticed this a while ago, but it only appeared that way when you're browsing YouTube, not other Google sites.

Definitely a step down IMO, you can't even read or reply to comments from the notification panel anymore. Thankfully the notifications went back to normal for me some time ago.

  4. So I don't have my G+ plus connected to my youtube. Result?
The bell is gone. No notification panel.
If it wasn't for the pop up notifications, I would not get any notifications at all. When I get a comment on my comment for example. Nada.
Where on earth are my YT notification? Like in one place, to looks through them.
    Thanks!
